Despite his lawsuit that names the Town of Amherstburg as a co-defendant, Councillor Rick Fryer said it has nothing to do with his love for the community. An $875,000 lawsuit, originally filed in 2008, stems from an Oct. 30, 2006 fall on Sandwich St. which occurred while Fryer was campaigning for the seat he would go on to win. Fryer said his damaged left ankle has required four surgeries since. Other co-defendants in the suit include Aecon Utlities and Union Gas. None of the allegations made by either side have been proven in court. Fryer claimed that in order for Union Gas and Aecon's insurance to pay any damages he put forth in his lawsuit, the town had to be included as well. "That was a decision by my lawyer.

In order for Union Gas and Aecon to pay for the damages I received and my time away from work and the potential disability I'm going to have for the rest of my life, the town had to be named to the lawsuit," he said. "This has nothing to do with me not liking or still loving this town. Most people have seen over the years how I've voted to keep taxation down for young families and seniors. I think they've seen the pain and suffering I've gone through. I've got three young daughters that, if something unforeseen doesn't allow me to work anymore or Ford doesn't allow for my restrictions to continue and stay employed, I have to have something that allows for the potential to get retrained to do something else."
