The parents of the Bellevue teenager who died after being injured while on a school ski trip in March 2007 have settled their lawsuit against Monroeville Schools and a pair of teachers. Although the terms of the settlement are confidential, Alicia Roshong, attorney for Michael and Teresa Jacobs, said an agreement was reached between both sides that was fair and put the painful matter to rest.
"I think we resolved it in a way so that everyone could walk away from it feeling the best they could," Roshong said. The Monroeville school board had already been dismissed from the civil litigation prior to the settlement. In March 2007, Greg Jacobs, 18, a Monroeville High School senior, attended a senior trip at Peek 'n Peak ski resort in Findley Lake, N.Y., with a few chaperones and a group of peers.
Although Jacobs had almost no experience snowboarding, he went down a black diamond slope -- the most challenging one at the park and flew off a jump. In his disposition, Ben Paul, Monroeville's athletic director and one of the chaperones, said he witnessed the tragedy. "This time around Greg went over and I saw him come up over the obstacle, (and then) not get his feet underneath him and land on his back," Paul said. Jacobs was taken to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., where he died March 8.
Before he died, his father gave consent to the Center for Organ Recovery and Education to remove his organs and tissue for transplant into others. A lawsuit filed by Jacobs' parents against the school contended the district and its employees were negligent when they failed to properly supervise Jacobs, a beginner and a student with a pre-existing mental condition, and ignored his history of risk-taking.
