The attorney of a retired sheriff's department sergeant who filed a lawsuit claiming investigators illegally handcuffed and detained him for seven hours during a homicide investigation says Riverside County officials are close to reaching a settlement agreement.

Riverside County supervisors last week approved a $125,000 settlement with Salvador Piña, who needs to sign off on the agreement, San Diego attorney Gerald Singleton said. “Nothing is officially final until the paperwork is signed, but we agreed on the terms,” he said. County spokeswoman Lys Mendez could not comment on the settlement since it was only discussed in closed session at last week's Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting.
