Many years after a fellow cop was shot by his own, the New York Police Sergeant gets $3.25 million from NY city. The Sergeant was battling legal issues for than a decade. Forty Six year old Dexter Brown who was shot in the back, finally agreed to dismiss his wrongful injury case.

Mr. Brown was an undercover narcotics team leader, he was shot in his back during 1998. Struggling with two suspects in the Bedford-Stuyvesant crack home he shot one of the suspects below the waist. The next thing that happened was Mr. Brown going down to the ground from a gun shot of a fellow officer; he was shot in the back. He turned and saw a team member, Detective Luis Lopez, shooting just a few feet away. Mr. Brown said that Detective Lopez shot him intentionally, and continued to fire even after being ordered to stop, fatally injuring one of the suspects before fleeing the scene.

Initially The NYC Police Department said that the suspect shot Sergeant Brown. A review board decided that Mr. Lopez fired the bullets, but they ruled the shots were in reason. Detective Lopez himself swore under oath that he was not the shooter. Pretrial proceedings in the case stretched on for years. Mr. Brown retired in 1999 on full disability and moved to Mississippi with his family in 2005. He said that he is still in pain, often needing steroid injections to get out of bed in the morning. He walks with a cane, and he said he will require further back surgery.
